How to Manage Your Dog’s Coat This Spring
March marks the beginning of shedding season for many dogs, as they prepare to ditch their heavy winter coats for lighter, summer-ready fur. If you’ve noticed more dog hair on your clothes, furniture, or floors, don’t worry—you’re not alone! Here’s everything you need to know about managing shedding and keeping your pup’s coat healthy.
Why Do Dogs Shed More in Spring?
Most dogs have a natural shedding cycle that aligns with seasonal changes. In winter, they grow a thicker undercoat for warmth, and when temperatures rise in spring, they shed it to stay cool.
However, the amount a dog sheds depends on their breed:
- Heavy Shedders: Huskies, Golden Retrievers, Labs, German Shepherds, and Corgis tend to shed heavily in spring and fall.
- Moderate Shedders: Beagles, Border Collies, and Pit Bulls experience some shedding but not as extreme.
- Low-Shedding Breeds: Poodles, Maltese, Shih Tzus, and Yorkies have hair that grows continuously and sheds minimally.
The Best Ways to Manage Shedding
While shedding is natural, there are plenty of ways to keep it under control:
- Brush, Brush, Brush! Regular brushing helps remove loose fur before it ends up on your furniture.
- Slicker brushes work well for long-haired breeds.
- Deshedding tools like the Furminator are great for thick-coated dogs.
- Rubber grooming gloves help remove fur from short-haired breeds.
- Schedule a Grooming Appointment: Professional grooming can make a huge difference in shedding control. To arrange a fur-cut for your pup within our building, contact For Pup Sake Grooming directly! - Give Your Dog a Bath: Bathing helps loosen dead fur and keeps the skin healthy. However, don’t overdo it—bathing too frequently can dry out their skin. A good rule of thumb is once a month or as needed.
- Check Their Diet: A dog’s coat health is directly linked to their nutrition. Make sure their food contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support a healthy coat. Adding a fish oil supplement can also help reduce excessive shedding.
When to Be Concerned About Shedding
While shedding is normal, excessive hair loss, bald spots, or changes in coat texture may indicate an underlying issue such as:
- Allergies or Skin Irritations
- Parasites (fleas, mites, etc.)
- Hormonal Imbalances or Thyroid Issues
If you notice unusual shedding patterns, it’s best to consult your veterinarian.
